Deer Repellent

Protection from Deer.

We have found both of the following products to be effective. We do suggest however that you consider re-applying both products sooner than recommended. If applied now for the winter (November) I would say a re-application in late January during a warm spell. Its not to say the product isn't still effective but by the time you discover it has worn off the deer could have caused significant dammage. Also don't become dependant on any one product, I would suggest changing things around from time to time so the deer do not become use to any one product.

Plants to watch are, Cedar, Hemlock, Holly, Euonymus, Rhododendron, Azalea and Japanese Maples. These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to plants preferred by deer.

Deer GuardTM

Deer Guard protects your growing plants from foraging deer with the bitterest tasting substance known to man and a detection agent that trains deer to avoid Deer Guard protected plants. Deer Guard may be applied to non-bearing plants such as flowers, ornamental plantings, trees and shrubs during the growing season when temperatures range from 40o to 90o Fahrenheit. Do not apply Deer Guard to vegetables, fruits, or any plant that may be eaten… the bitter taste will make them inedible.

Plantskydd

Plantskydd Deer & Rabbit Repellent is made in the USA from 100% natural, environment-friendly ingredients. Plantskydd Deer Repellent (Soluble Powder Concentrate) is 'Listed' (trw-9589) by OMRI-the Organic Materials Review Institute- as "suitable for use in the production of organic food and fibre "- as is Plantskydd Rabbit & Small Critter Repellent (trw-731). Plantskydd is member tested and recommended by the National Home Gardening Club.

Plantskydd Deer & Rabbit Repellent was initially developed in Sweden in 1991 in response to commercial forest plantations being decimated by plant eating mammals. The forest industry needed an animal repellent that could last through severe weather and meet Sweden's strict environmental laws. Plantskydd's long-term effectiveness is attributable to the tenacity of its 100% natural, vegetable oil binder in sticking to plants, even under severe snow/rainfall conditions: up to 6 months over winter, 3-4 months in summer. The Swedish name for the product "Plantskydd" translates as "Plant Protection".

Plantskydd Deer & Rabbit Repellent works by emitting an odor that animals associate with predator activity, repelling the animal before it nibbles on plants. Research has proven that odor-based repellents are more effective than other repellent systems where the animal needs to taste treated plants before being repelled. Once animals are attracted to an area and begin feeding, it is more difficult to discourage them from returning. Plantskydd stimulates a fear-based response which will have deer, elk, moose, opossum, and rabbits looking to dine somewhere other than your garden or plantation.

Netting

Simply throw a piece of fine netting over your valued plants. This process is fairly effective if your plant is of a manageable size but it does have its draw backs.

Visually its not very appealing If its not securely attached the deer will get around it or through it.

Fencing

I havn't used this process to any great degree. We have tried to install an electric fence around an entire property but the smaller deer always find a way through, and they eat as much as the bigger deer.

I have seen fencing used around individual trees in the Lunenburg area. This property owner is having good success with it. It entails 4 steel stakes set back from the from the trees wrapped with snow fence. Keep the fencing back far enough so the deer can't reach the tree, about a five to six foot circle. This is good for larger deciduous trees until they reach a size where the deer can't reach their branches.

Irish Spring Soap

The smell of this soap even drives me away. I have had comments from customers that it works for them, but our attempted use failed.

Lets face it, deer are a huge problem. New rules allowing hunters to take more deer this year might help but a little. Homeowners need to find several things that work for them. Keep changing your approach and hopefully the deer will keep back.
