Description
Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese maple, is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to Japan, Korea, and China. This species is renowned for its delicate and finely dissected leaves, which provide a stunning array of colors throughout the seasons. In spring, the foliage often emerges in shades of red, orange, or pink, transforming to lush greens in the summer. In the fall, the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a spectacular display of autumn color. Japanese maples typically grow to heights of 15 to 25 feet with a spread of 10 to 20 feet, forming a graceful, layered canopy that adds elegance to any garden setting.
Japanese maple thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8, favoring partial shade to full sun conditions, although protection from harsh afternoon sun is beneficial in hotter climates to prevent leaf scorch. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils that are rich in organic matter. This tree is versatile in its use, fitting well into a variety of garden styles, including traditional Japanese gardens, woodland gardens, and contemporary landscapes. Due to its relatively slow growth and manageable size, Acer palmatum is also popular for container planting and bonsai. Its year-round beauty and graceful form make it a cherished ornamental tree for garden enthusiasts and landscapers alike.
