Description
Acer rubrum, commonly known as red maple, is a versatile and widely distributed deciduous tree native to North America. This species is celebrated for its vibrant red foliage, which can be seen in various forms throughout the year—from the red flowers and twigs in spring to the red fruits (samaras) in late summer, and the striking scarlet and orange leaves in the fall. Red maples can grow to heights of 40 to 70 feet with a spread of 30 to 50 feet, developing a rounded to oval-shaped crown. The leaves are typically 2 to 6 inches long, with three to five lobes and serrated edges, turning a vivid red in autumn, which makes it a popular choice for ornamental planting.
Red maple thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9, demonstrating its adaptability to a wide range of climatic conditions. It grows well in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they are moist and well-drained. This tree is known for its ability to thrive in both wet and dry conditions, making it a common sight in diverse habitats such as swamps, forests, and urban areas. Due to its rapid growth rate and tolerance to pollution and compacted soils, red maple is frequently used in urban landscaping, parks, and residential areas. Its stunning fall color and hardiness contribute to its popularity as one of the most planted and admired trees in North America.
