Corylus americana, commonly known as American hazelnut, flowers in early spring while brown catkins dangling from branches turn bright yellow as pollen matures. American hazelnut is a great addition to native garden as hedging, or in sites with poor soil. Large clusters of hazelnuts will form after flowering has finished. Hazelnuts are edible by humans, as is a great source of food for native mammals. They are drought tolerant and turn a gorgeous copper color in the fall.
