Description
Hibiscus syriacus, commonly known as Rose of Sharon, is a deciduous flowering shrub in the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is native to East Asia, particularly Korea, and has been widely cultivated for ornamental purposes. The shrub typically grows to a height of 8-12 feet with a spread of 6-10 feet, forming an upright and vase-shaped structure. Its leaves are medium to dark green, ovate to rhombic, and coarsely toothed. Blooming from late summer to fall, Hibiscus syriacus produces large, showy flowers in a variety of colors including white, pink, red, blue, and purple. Each flower features a prominent central column of stamens and can reach up to 3 inches in diameter, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Rose of Sharon is highly valued for its hardiness and versatility in garden design. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it is adaptable to a range of soil conditions, including those that are slightly alkaline or acidic. This shrub is drought-tolerant once established and can withstand urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city gardens. In addition to its ornamental appeal, Hibiscus syriacus is also used in traditional medicine and culinary practices in some cultures. Pruning is recommended in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage vigorous blooming. Overall, Hibiscus syriacus is a resilient and attractive addition to any landscape, providing vibrant color and texture throughout the growing season.
