Description
Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as bigleaf hydrangea, is a deciduous shrub renowned for its large, showy flower clusters and vibrant foliage. This species, native to Japan and Korea, typically grows to a height and spread of 3 to 6 feet. The plant is characterized by its broad, ovate leaves with serrated edges, which provide a lush green backdrop to the striking flowers. The blooms, which appear from late spring to early autumn, can vary in color from blue, pink, and purple to white, often changing hues based on soil pH—acidic soils produce blue flowers, while alkaline soils yield pink ones. The flower heads come in two forms: mophead (large, round clusters) and lacecap (flatter clusters with a ring of showy outer flowers surrounding smaller, fertile ones).
