Description
Tilia cordata, commonly known as littleleaf linden or small-leaved lime, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Europe and Western Asia. This tree is celebrated for its attractive, heart-shaped leaves that are smaller than those of its relative, the American basswood, typically measuring 2 to 3 inches across. The leaves turn a beautiful yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. In early to mid-summer, littleleaf linden produces clusters of small, fragrant, pale-yellow flowers that are highly attractive to bees and beneficial insects, making it an excellent tree for promoting biodiversity. The flowers are followed by small, round, nut-like fruits that persist into the fall.
Littleleaf linden thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 7, demonstrating considerable adaptability to different climates. It prefers full sun to partial shade and grows best in well-drained, fertile soils, though it is tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. This tree can reach heights of 50 to 70 feet with a similar spread, forming a dense, pyramidal to rounded canopy that provides excellent shade. Due to its uniform growth habit, tolerance to urban conditions, and resistance to pollution, Tilia cordata is a popular choice for street planting, parks, and large landscapes. Its aesthetic appeal, combined with its ecological benefits, makes it a valuable addition to both urban and rural settings.
